The Duodecumus drawings were made for the Re-considering Canon Exhibition at the Design Museum, London, UK in 2018.

“My first reaction to being given Lego as our icon was one of excitement, like most adults of our generation I grew up playing with Lego, the pleasure of attaching two bricks together remains undiminished to this day.
The concept is the most important aspect in my work. I follow the same working methodology on all my projects; I analyse the underlying principle of a subject, stripping it back to the essential idea.
With this project I analysed the basic building blocks and the number theory that governs Lego. This led to the creation of works based around the number Twelve.
Twelve is a multiple of the numbers One - Two - Three - Four - Six.
Where these numbers converge at Twelve is the rule that governs the location and size of the building blocks in the works. There were many outcomes to the rules I set myself, three of these outcomes are presented here.
By restricting myself to using combinations of these numbers I worked within tight parameters. Just like playing with Lego working within parameters paradoxically allows for great freedom of imagination.
I chose the purest expression of this idea; a representation of the building blocks in two dimensions. This birds eye view reinforces the graphical clarity of the prints and highlights the beauty of the Lego system.
These prints are visions of pure thought on both the micro and macro scale. They are blueprints for Jewellery, Furniture, Buildings, Cities or Landscapes. They respond to Lego as a tool that translates our thoughts into new worlds.”
